How to get back into the habit of reading books

Many people are heard saying, ‘I don’t have the habit of reading books anymore. I used to finish a book in one sitting. Now I can’t read books. I have to start again.’

But it turns out that the beginning is not happening anymore. Or when I sit down with a book after many days, I don’t make progress, I don’t want to read. What is the way out of this situation, how to get back into the habit of reading books?

Start with simple and small books

If you haven’t had the habit of reading books for a long time, when you start again, you may get tired quickly if you pick up a complex book. Therefore, it is better to choose books that are small and comfortable to read. It is best to choose books that are exciting at the beginning, what happens next, what happens next, that is, keep the interest alive.

Set small goals for each day

Don’t plan to read for hours at the beginning. Instead, set small goals, small goals are easier to achieve. Goal setting can be done in two ways. 1. Page-based, 2. Time-based.

In terms of pages, make it a rule to read 5 to 10 pages every day at the beginning. And in terms of time, it can be 15 to 20 minutes. It is best if you can read at a specific time every day. It can be before going to bed at night or when you wake up in the morning.

Create an environment

If you are in the habit of reading, it is possible to read books even while sitting in a vehicle on the go. Many people are seen reading books on the bus and metro. Many book readers are also heard saying that they finished the book while sitting in traffic.

However, if you take a long break and start reading again, it is better to have a suitable environment for reading books. Because, attention cannot be maintained in a distracted environment.

Therefore, it is important to have a specific environment for reading books. It is better not to keep the phone near you while reading. Or you will also benefit from putting it in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode.

‘Not feeling good’ does not mean a break

It is better to start with small and easy books in the beginning. However, after starting to read the chosen book, it turns out that it does not appeal to you. Reading books with breaks cannot be omitted at this time. There is no need to force yourself to finish a book if you don’t like it. In this case, you can put down a specific book and start another book.

Reward yourself

Who doesn’t like getting rewards! So rewarding yourself is a good way to form a habit. Maybe you have a coffee or listen to music after reading a specific page of the book. Writing the name of the gift on a sticky note and leaving the specific page in a row can make the task easier. Completing small goals releases dopamine in the brain, which creates interest in reading. You can also gift yourself a book after finishing a book.

Participate in a reading challenge

Challenges are fun for many. Some people also love to work on challenges. So, while challenging yourself with yourself when reading books, you can also set a goal to finish a specific book in a week or month with friends. Apart from that, you can set a goal (such as 12 books a year) at the beginning of the year on ‘Goodreads’ or similar apps, which will keep track of your progress. And you will also feel mentally excited when you see your progress.

Participate in reading circles

Reading circles are a great way to continue the practice of reading books. So, if you read books regularly, you can participate in reading circles. In addition, many people discuss specific books in reading circles. There are opportunities to participate in various reading circles in different cities and villages of the country, including Dhaka.

Write a review

Write your feelings about reading after reading a book. You can also share the writing on social media. This can make many more people interested in reading the book after seeing you. In addition, reading books regularly and writing about them will not only open your writing skills, but also provide peace.

Listen to audio books If you have difficulty reading with one eye for a long time, then audio books can be a great alternative. By listening to books while working or walking, you will feel drawn to the story again, which will make you interested in reading the hard copy of the book later.
