Is Your Chechen and Fish Fresh?

It is possible to confirm whether the meat is safe or not from its color, smell and other characteristics. If the meat does not seem safe, do not eat it or do not let anyone eat it. It is also necessary to be careful about some things while carrying and cooking raw meat. This was explained by Dr. Kakoli Halder, Assistant Professor of the Department of Microbiology at Dhaka Medical College.

How to tell if chicken meat is fresh or stale

  • Fresh chicken meat is light pink in color. Stale meat looks very dirty. Throw it away if you see gray, yellow or greenish colors in the meat. If bacteria grow in the meat, such changes occur in the color of the meat.
  • You can also recognize fresh meat by smell. Fresh meat does not have much smell. Even though it is a normal light smell; but the smell of stale meat is not good. If bacteria grow in the meat, it can have a bad smell, and you can also get a sour smell from it.
  • If bacteria grow in the meat, it can become very slippery or excessively soft. If you press a finger on any part of the meat, that area may give way. Bacteria can also make the meat sticky.

After buying

  • It is not enough to just choose safe meat; rather, you should also take care that its water or juice does not spread here and there. After buying meat from the market or supermarket, wrap it well before putting it in your bag or cart.
  • Place the meat at the very bottom of the bag or cart so that the meat juice does not spill on any other food items. It is better to use a separate bag to carry meat. When storing meat in the refrigerator, it should be kept in a separate airtight box or ziplock bag. Care should be taken to ensure that the meat juice does not get on other foods in the refrigerator.
  • Food stored in the refrigerator can easily spoil during power outages. During load shedding, the refrigerator door should be opened as little as possible.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Keep other food items separate from raw meat.
  • To wash meat before cooking, slowly pour water over it. Be careful not to splash water from the meat.
  • After cutting raw meat, wash the knife or fork with hot water and soap or detergent. Clean all surfaces where raw meat will be cut or washed and any areas where meat juices may fall.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap before and after touching raw meat.
  • Make sure to cook the meat thoroughly. It is best to avoid undercooked food.
