The survey of 2,070 adults in the United States found that 83 percent of owners consider their pets to be their own children. 55 percent of Gen Z and Millennials believe it is possible to build a life centered around a pet without having children. 54 percent are even willing to leave their estate in the name of a pet if given the opportunity.
Reasons for prioritizing pets over children include not being able to raise children (45 percent), being able to care for pets more easily (35 percent), having less financial stress (32 percent), having fewer responsibilities (28 percent), and a personal desire to be childless (24 percent). In addition, 29 percent of Gen Z and Millennials said they have gone into debt to pay for their pets.
Young people are not making any concessions when it comes to spending money on pets. They are choosing ways such as stopping buying food from outside and cooking for themselves (61 percent), reducing shopping (45 percent), working part-time alongside their jobs (37 percent), even postponing their health check-ups (25 percent) or moving to a smaller house (26 percent). Yet they are not lagging behind in spending on pet clothes, birthday celebrations and gym-cafes.
Due to this financial pressure, pet owners are currently demanding legal benefits from the government. 69 percent of owners want their pets to be recognized as legal dependents and to be given tax exemptions like children. In addition, they are also demanding medical leave and insurance benefits. 86 percent of owners believe that no artificial pet created with artificial intelligence or AI can ever replace the emotional connection with their real animal.
